Scented paper, in thirty seconds
The thirty-second ritual — tear, fold, light, blow out — and the three scented papers we compare, from Montrouge, Florence and Japan.
What it is
Strips of paper soaked in a resin — benzoin in the original Papier d'Arménie, made in Montrouge since 1885 — that release scent when they smoulder. A booklet holds thirty-six strips; one strip perfumes a room.
How to burn it
Tear one strip along the perforation. Fold it into a small accordion so it stands on its own. Light one end, let it catch for a second, then blow the flame out: the strip should glow and smoke, not burn. Rest it on a heat-proof dish and leave it until it is ash.
Papier d'Arménie vs Carta d'Armenia
The French booklet is the original and the most affordable; it comes in Tradition (the benzoin scent), Arménie (myrrh and vanilla) and Rose. Santa Maria Novella's Carta d'Armenia is the Florentine version in the Officina's packaging — eighteen sheets, a gift more often than a habit. Japanese paper incense (HA KO) is a different object: a leaf-shaped paper that rests on a small mat.
Why we keep it small
It is one ritual, not a catalogue. We show the three papers once, properly, and do not repeat near-identical listings to fill space.
Safety
The ember is live until the strip is fully ash. Never leave it unattended, and keep it on a dish away from anything that can catch.
