Sand candles, explained

What candle sand is, why the bowl never burns down, how many wicks to place, which vessel to choose, and how to refill — with the sets we compare.

What candle sand is

Candle sand — also sold as pearled wax, wax pearls or powder candle — is wax granulated into tiny beads. You pour it into any heat-safe vessel, push in a wick, and light it. Only the wax around the wick melts, into a small pool that resets when the flame goes out; the rest stays loose. That is why the same bowl can be relit, reshaped and refilled for years.

Why the bowl is the product

A bag of pearls on its own is a refill. What people actually buy — and keep — is the vessel: a stone, concrete, ceramic, wood or glass bowl that holds a level white surface and three small flames. Every set we list includes a vessel, wax and wicks; refills have their own page and are deliberately not on the front of the site.

How many wicks

The maker's packaging sets the spacing and the count for a vessel size. Three wicks in a wide bowl is the classic composition because the three pools of light stay separate; a cube or a narrow vase takes one. Never add pearls to a burning bowl — let the pool cool first.

Choosing a vessel

Stone and concrete are the heaviest and the most forgiving of heat; ceramic gives the most colour; glass shows the pearls as a column of white; wood reads warmest on a dining table. A wider, shallower bowl gives a wider surface for several wicks; a taller vessel suits one. We group the sets by form so you can compare like with like.

Refilling

When a pool has burned down, top the surface up with fresh pearls and place a new wick. Refills come in scented white and unscented coloured bags; the bowl you already own decides the quantity.

Safety

These are open flames. Burn within sight, on a stable heat-resistant surface, away from anything that can catch fire and out of reach of children and pets; follow the maker's wick spacing and fill height. We do not make claims about burn times or smoke — the maker does, on the packaging.
